INSTRUCTIONS
Lanoxin, a trade name lor Digoxin, is a-very helpful medication for people whose heart rhythms are not normal and whose hearts are not able to pump as effectively as they should. Lanoxin helps increase the force of contraction of the heart so the body’s needs are supplied more efficiently.
Follow the instructions on the prescription exactly. Lanoxin differs from many drugs because it requires a higher dosage at first (the “digitalizing” dose) and a lower but steady dosage (the “maintenance” dosage} later. After you have completed the digitalizing dose schedule, take the maintenance dose at approximately the same time each day. Do not be alarmed or worried if your physician changes the dosage. This may vary from time to time depending on your response. This does not necessarily mean that you are unusual or that the Lanoxin is not doing what it should. It takes several days for the effects to wear off and several days to regain effectiveness if you stop and then start again.
In some people Lanoxin may cause a serious loss of potassium. Many people take Lanoxin along with diuretics, and this combination is quite likely to cause potassium loss. Being unusually thirsty or weak may be early signs that you need more potassium. You may help prevent this by eating more potassium-rich foods, such as oranges, grapefruit (or their juices), bananas and apricots.
Take all the medicine prescribed, even if you feel much better before you have taken all of it. If you have an adverse reaction, stop using the medicine and contact your doctor.
